Best Practices for Patient Consent with AI in NZ Healthcare

Best Practices for Patient Consent with AI in NZ Healthcare

Make sure every staff member understands the importance of privacy and consent when using AI tools. Refer to our compliance and privacy guides, and keep up-to-date on the latest best practices for NZ healthcare teams.

1. Be Transparent & Informative

Clearly explain the AI tool’s purpose before any use in a consultation - patients should understand that conversational AI will assist with clinical note-taking or processing, but not make clinical decisions.

2. Use Layered Consent Approaches
  • Display signage in your waiting area and on practice websites stating that AI tools are in use.
  • Update enrolment forms to mention AI use as part of practice policy.
  • Always obtain verbal consent at the start of each session, even when written or digital consent has already been given.
3. Offer Opt-Out Options

Patients must be able to decline AI involvement at any time. Their care will not be affected if they choose to opt out.

4. Document Consent Routinely

Record each instance of patient consent in the medical record until it becomes familiar to both clinician and patient. Ongoing documentation ensures compliance and builds trust.

5. Provide Accessible Information

Have a FAQ or information sheet ready to answer the most common questions. Regularly seek feedback to refine your policies.
